Uttarakhand, the “Land of The God” is famous for its simplicity and the origin of two holy rivers The Ganga and Yamuna in all over the world. This place is also known for the unique wedding style and traditions. Now in Bollywood influenced era, everyone wants a big destination wedding and hence the first choice of every would- be- Couple is this holy and divine place known as Uttarakhand. So, here we decide to throw some light on the much talked about custom i.e. Haldi Ceremony or called as Haldi Haath in Uttarakhand and how it is being Celebrated by the people of Uttarakhand.

Haldihaath an important custom in Indian weddings

Haldihaath or Haldi ceremony is one of the most important rituals among Indian weddings. Almost in every region of India, this custom is so popular though the style of applying Haldi is varied with the place to place. This custom is important for both the bride and groom-to-be.Mostly this Ceremony held a day before the wedding or somewhere on the wedding day.In this Ceremony, Haldi is applied on the body of both the girl and boy. The females of respective families applied a paste of Haldi, Sandalwood, and yogurt on the body of the would be couple and sings the Mangal Geet.The ceremony is also accompanied by the traditional dance style in which the boy and girl both takes the part in their traditional dresses. In Uttarakhand wedding during this ceremony, it is necessary for the bride to wear “Rangwali Pichodda” called as odhani or Dupatta which is orange and yellow in color and embarked with golden and red dots on it.

Significance of Haldi in Indian weddings

Haldi or turmeric has its own place in the Indian customs. Though it’s a spice used in a dish to give it a yellow color. But in India, this spice is treated as a sacred one. Almost in every religious activity, Haldi has used whether it’s Hawan, puja, or wedding. It is also known for its cosmetic and medicinal properties. The curcumin found in the Turmeric is a natural inflammatory compound which blemishes the skin and makes it glowing or acne free. In many customs, it is to be believed if the would be couple apply the Haldi paste on the unmarried one than they will soon find a good looking partner. It is also believed that the Haldi keeps away the Buri Najar or the evil eye. That’s why usually the bride and groom- to- be are not allowed to leave the home after this ceremony. The color of Haldi is also considered as the auspicious one. This color also signifies the fertility between the couple and also bless them with the prosperity to start their new life ahead.
