Grah Pravesh A Post Wedding Ritual To Welcome The Ghar Ki Laxmi

Post wedding ceremonies are the requisite part of every traditional Indian wedding. After the Vidaai ceremony which is often quite emotional ceremony for a bride as she leaves her parents home and comes to begin her new phase of life in her husband’s new home. The groom’s family make sure that the newly wed feel comfortable and celebration doesn’t stop here. To continue the merriment, post wedding ceremonies are followed by some funny and heart warming post wedding rituals.

Dwar Rukai – After the arrival of newly-wed couples completing all the wedding customs, sister’s of the groom stopped them at the entraceĀ  and asks a gift from him in order to allow the couple to enter in the house.

Grah Pravesh– Followed by Dwar Rukai the auspicious moment comes .i.e. Grah Pravesh in which the the bride enters her husband’s home for the very first time and considers as the incarnation of goddess Lakshmi. In this ritual, all the female relatives of the home stand inside at the entrance and sing the mangal geet or arrival song to welcome the beautiful bride.Then the bride is welcomed by her mother in law with an Aarti and Tilak. A kalash full of rice is kept at the doorstep which she has to push slowly with her right foot while entering the home. After that she dip her both foot in the plate or flask of water containing vermilion powder so that she leaves her footprints across the home as she walks. This entry of new bride signify that the Goddess Laxmi or Goodess of wealth entered in the home and brings success, prosperity, good luck, happiness to the grooms life and in the lives of her new family members. After This she touches the feet of every elder of the home and in return they give the blessings to her for her upcoming life.

This Grah pravesh ceremony is an auspicious and memorable moment for the newly wed couples and for their family as this is the first step taken together by both of them to start a new journey of life together.
