The Panch Prayag or five sacred confluences, as the name depicts is the set of five holy rivers which confluence in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The Panch Prayags that are Vishnu Prayag, Nanda Prayag, Karna Prayag, Dev Prayag, Rudraprayag are appraised sacred among Hindus. Prayag is also noted as “the place of sacrifice” in Sanskrit. People visit Panch Prayags during different festivals like Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, Basant Panchami and Ram Navmi to take a holy dip in sacred rivers. Legend associated with Panch Prayag is there was a Kapil muni who had made a horse ready to sacrifice in Aswamedh Yagya got stolen by a thief. Unaware of the happening, he cursed meditated Bhagirath’s ancestor to turn into ashes blaming them to escape the horse. Later Bhagirath got to know about his ancestors and requested Goddess Ganga to come on earth to wipe away the ashes of King Bhagirath’s ancestors.

Another most famous sight is Panch Kedar located in the Garhwal region. The Panch Kedars refers to five sacred Hindu temples of Lord Shiva. Kedarnath, Rudranath, Kalpeshwar, Tughnath, Madhya Maheshwar are five religious temples which constitute Panch Kedar. According to a legend, Pandavas who killed Kauravas in Mahabharata sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to free themselves from the sin of killing their cousins(Gotra Hatya). Lord Shiva evaded them repeatedly and hid in Garhwal region in the form of a bull. The Pandavas then went to Garhwal region and one of the five Pandavas recognised Shiva and took hold of bull by tail and legs but Lord Shiva disappeared into ground later appeared in parts Hump at Kedarnath, Arms (Bahu) at Tunganath, Face (Mukh) at Rudranath, Navel (Nabhi) at Madamaheshwar, Hair (Jata) at Kalpeshwar.
