Dev Uthani Ekadashi is also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi and Devutthana Ekadashi. Dev Uthani Ekadashi is one of the important Ekadashis observed by the Hindus which occur on the 11th lunar day of the Shukla Paksha of Hindu month of Kartik. This significant day marks the beginning of Hindu weddings in India.It is to be believed that God Vishnu(Gods of god) wakes up after the long time period of 4 months or Chaturmas(where it is to believe that no auspicious work is done). The day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal by the devotees as it signifies the God’s awakening or awakening of Vishnu.

In Hinduism, On this day people observe fasting or offer the prayer to goddess Tulsi and Lord Vishnu by performing their wedding rituals in the Form of holy black colored stone known as Shaligram, which is regarded as the husband of Tulsi. This ritual of marrying Vishnu and Tulsi known as Tulsi Vivah. Every year the maximum no. of weddings is performed on this day as this day is considered as the most auspicious day of the year according to Hindu Calender.

On this day the magical Tulsi Plant is adorned with 16 Shringaar like a newlywed bride and rituals are performed by the Pandit ji for the well being of all family members. Getting married on this day considers as a pair made in heaven. It is said that lovebirds or male or female who are not getting any other Shubh mahurat for performing the wedding rituals and traditions with each other can choose this significant day without asking the priest or couples who can’t wait for more months to get settle in their lives can opt for Devuthan Ekadashi for the wedding ceremony. It is believed that any auspicious task like Roka ceremony, engagement ceremony or celebration of the occasion can be done without any second thought. Lord Vishnu himself showers his blessings to the newlywed couple.This day also marks the beginning of a period of joy and blissfulness in the lives of married couples.

Rituals to be Followed:

  • On this day men and women both observe the fast to ward off any evil and to remove sins of previous birth.
  • Devotees who perform this fast eat Falahars Or Kuttu ka Satvik Bhojan.
  • Water Chestnut and sweet potato have also been offered as a Prasad to God.
  • Elder ladies of the house made Dev with the Ocher on the wall and than sing songs to awake the gods.
  • It is to be believed that offering prayers to Lord Vishnu with full devotion and pure intentions result in the fulfill all your desires and wishes.
  • This day is celebrated with different significant rituals in states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
